In 2010 and 2011, the city of Christchurch and the surrounding areas of Canterbury were struck by two powerful earthquakes. The first, in September 2010, was larger, but the second, in February 2011, caused more damage and loss of life. Opened in 2017, the Canterbury Earthquake National Memorial stands as a poignant tribute to these natural disasters. Located in the heart of Christchurch, the memorial features a reflective water wall and a winding path that leads visitors through a serene and contemplative space. Here, visitors can pay their respects and reflect on the resilience of the community that faced such challenging times.
