The Spirit of Detroit

The Spirit of Detroit, a beloved symbol of Motor City, stands as the city’s most famous piece of public art. Created in 1958 by local artist Marshal Fredericks, this 26-foot (8-meter) bronze figure is an impressive sight. In one hand, the statue holds a gilded sphere representing divinity, while the other cradles a family, symbolizing human relationships. At the time of its creation, it was considered the largest bronze cast since the Renaissance. Today, visitors can admire the detailed craftsmanship and the powerful symbolism that continues to inspire and represent the spirit of Detroit.
